NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane University community is mourning Demo Kaltabanis, a 25-year-old medical student whose path took him from nursing studies in Canada to medical training in New Orleans. A funeral home listing says he was born July 29, 2001, and died Nov. 1, 2026. Arrangements are being handled by Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, and a full obituary has not yet been published.
Kaltabanis graduated from Western University in Ontario with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2023 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 2025. His published research examined recovery from nicotine vaping among youth.
According to a 2023 essay in Western University's alumni magazine, as described in the blog, he grew up in a low-income household in Markham, Ontario, and wrote that having his own room and a quiet space to study at university was a turning point. He used his story to speak about supporting students facing financial hardship. He was also reported to be a vice president of Tulane's Emergency Medicine Interest Group.
Details about his death have not been publicly confirmed, and no cause has been released.
For his family, friends, classmates and the people who learned from him, this is a heartbreaking loss. May those who loved him find comfort in the memories they shared, and may his dedication to caring for others be remembered with gratitude.
