ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — One person was killed and three others were seriously injured early Sunday when a vehicle fleeing police crashed into another car, leaving families and a community grieving, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Community reports identify the person who died as Nelly Cornell, 25, of Florissant, though the name hasn't been confirmed in official statements.
Police said O'Fallon officers began chasing Jahlil A. Campbell-Williams, 30, just before 1 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, for an undisclosed felony violation and ended the pursuit near Mid-Rivers Mall. A state trooper then saw his vehicle on Interstate 70 and tried to stop it, but it didn't. Troopers said Campbell-Williams exited at Natural Bridge Road around 1:10 a.m. and struck the rear of a 2025 Kia K5 at Springdale Avenue.
The person who died was a passenger in the Kia and was ejected, the blog reports. Three other people in the Kia, including the driver, were seriously injured and taken to a hospital. Campbell-Williams and a second person in his car were taken into custody.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Campbell-Williams with aggravated fleeing resulting in death, first-degree involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault and four counts of aggravated fleeing causing physical injury. The charges are allegations, and the investigation continues.
For the loved ones of the person killed and the three injured in the Kia, an ordinary night turned into one of grief and fear. May they find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
